Newlyweds with starry eyes
Whose love is new, filled with surprise
Each new day holds mystery
With no thought of what tomorrow brings
They say "I'll hold your hand and you'll hold mine"
Together forever 'til the end of time
Undeterred by tragedy
Pain, strife, and disease
Life knocked them to their knees
But never once did their love leave

Love is free, love is blind
Love is patient, love is kind
Love you can feel inside a gaze
A gaze in which beauty never fades
The kind of love we need
The kind of love God made
Well you don't see much of love like that
These days

Thoroughly weds with comfortable eyes
Whose love is strong, tho it's been tried
Each new day holds familiar routines
With the comfort of knowing what tomorrow brings
They say "You'll hold my heart and I'll hold yours"
As they love each other more and more
Undeterred by tragedy
Pain, strife, and disease
Life knocked them to their knees
But never once did their love leave

Love is free, love is blind
Love is patient, love is kind
Love you can feel inside a gaze
A gaze in which beauty never fades
The kind of love we need
The kind of love God made
Well you don't see much of love like that
These days

Truly weds with aging eyes
Whose love has stood the test of time
Each new day they're happy to see
Never knowing what tomorrow will bring
They say "I'm right here, I'll never leave"
The more his light fades, the tighter she cleaves
Now they're facing tragedy
Pain, suffering, and disease
Life has knocked her to her knees
But never once, his side did she leave

Love is free, love is blind
Love is patient, love is kind
Love you can feel inside a gaze
A gaze in which beauty never fades
The kind of love we need
The kind of love God made
Well you don't see much of love like that
These days

Seventy-one years of wedded bliss
Disagreements and the "I'm sorry" kiss
Children born, and children grown
Houses built and gardens sown
Nights of love and arms so warm
Angry words and emotional storms
Aging bodies, slipping minds
But still loving time after time
Cancer ravaging his body, his face
A lesser man would feel disgraced
But his loving wife still with shining eyes
Bolstered his heart with loving sighs
As he slipped into eternity
I'm sure he felt as loved as at the beginning
Three months without him was long enough to live
So into eternity
Her heart joined his

Love is free, love is blind
Love is patient, love is kind
Love you can feel inside a gaze
A gaze in which beauty never fades
The kind of love we need
The kind of love God made
Well you don't see much of love like that
These days

The love I have, I pray it stays
Because it's hard to find love like that these days
A lady I know recently lost both of her parents... they were married for 71 years and I found that pretty inspiring.

This is beautiful.
It truly is inspiring to know they stuck with each other for so long, wow! You really don't see that these days, divorce seems like just the "next step" of a relationship now and that's really sad. Why do people feel the only thing to do is give up? They don't even fight to stay together anymore.
Really wonderful poem, really! :+fav:
